the story.
eden grew up as an only child in new york city, new york. her father had been a lawyer ever since she could remember while her mother never lifted a finger and stayed domesticated. for awhile the family seemed to be nothing but loving and caring, but as she grew up, eden saw a shift within the family dynamic. her once overbearing and overly-affectionate mother was suddenly distancing herself away from her only kin, and eden was left feeling isolated and as if she had no one to talk to. sure, she was presumed to be "daddy's girl" considering the circumstances, but that all changed when she found her father passed out from a cocaine overdose in his at-home office. thankfully he survived, but as a twelve year old, it turned her world upside-down and her perspective on her own blood changed. it suddenly made sense to her why her father seemed to drink so much wine with her mother every dinner and yet he was never that intoxicated nor sleepy, and would stay up hours after midnight still doing his work. as it was she was extremely independent and practically raised herself, but it only became more apparent.when she finally reached high school, she started distancing herself even more so from her family. there were times she wouldn't show up for days and would not receive even a text from them. she started hanging out with people too old for her and dabbled in drugs too intense for her developing brain. although she never went overboard with substances, she relied on them to feel something while forgetting about the world and the problems she was desperately trying to run away from. every time she felt like she was starting to turn into her dad (usually this revelation came after countless nights relying on that pristine white powder), she would recoil and stop immediately. the sense of losing control and becoming dependent on something were two of her biggest fears, so she would make sure to quickly snap out of it before it was too late.a couple of her "friends" during this drug-fueled era had overdosed, but she remembers one so very clearly. it was her last year of high school and they decided for their senior ditch day to grab a couple friends and rent a penthouse for a few nights over the weekend. it was sunday evening when she finally got some alone time with someone who she thought she was in love with. although they never truly dated, these two were joined at the hip and acting as if they were a couple for the majority of senior year. they were watching a movie as they waited for their friends to come back so they could all go out clubbing. although eden was sober, she could tell her partner was on something. at one point he complained about a headache and wanted to lie down, and she left him alone for only a few minutes before she came into the room with a large glass of water and some food she hoped would help him. however, she walked in on a motionless body with blood coming from his nose. she frantically called 911 and after waiting up all night at the emergency room waiting lobby, he was pronounced dead. the trauma of losing him and seeing his lifeless body was too much for her to stay in new york, so she made arrangements to finish her semester early and immediately jetted off across the country. although she still dabbles in drugs, every once in awhile her mind won't stop playing repeats of their last moments together on the same planet.
